Winners announced for Charleston Area Alliance’s second annual Holiday Window Display Contest

Charleston, W.Va. – The Charleston Area Alliance’s second annual Holiday Window Display Contest has been lighting up downtown throughout the month of December. More than 30 businesses and organizations decorated their windows as part of the contest. Six awards – including a people’s choice award – were announced last evening at Art After Dark at the Clay Center following ArtWalk.

“The competition produced enchanting store windows decked out in lights, tinsel and creative decorations around every corner in our downtown,” said Susie Salisbury, the Alliance’s Vice President for Community Development. “We were thrilled to have participation by both businesses with physical storefronts and downtown property owners who partnered with other organizations. Projects like this allow us all to join forces during the most critical time of year for retail.”

The community cast votes for a people’s choice award winner, while a team of independent judges voted on the remaining awards. The winners were:

    • Best overall: Oddbird Gift Emporium (received an advertising package from WV Radio Corporation)
    • People’s choice: Kesner & Kesner (received an advertising package from WCHS TV)
    • Best use of merchandising: Art Emporium
    • Best theme: Adelphia Sports Bar
    • Best at night: Black Sheep Burrito and Brews
    • Most original: Ichiban

Salisbury said the Alliance plans to expand the competition next year.

“It has been so successful in getting people downtown and the displays really showcase the pride we all have in our community. So we want to make it bigger and better and capture even more opportunities next year,” she said.

The contest was coordinated by the Alliance’s Downtown Task Force and sponsored by WCHS TV, WV Radio Corporation and Tony the Tailor.
