    • About

GFWC-WV the Woman's Club of Charleston was organized on March 5, 1909, when nine Charleston women met at the home of Mrs. W. B. Shober for that purpose. Meetings were held in homes of members until membership grew to 34. At that time the Kanawha Hotel was chosen as the meeting place. By 1920 the membership of the Club had grown to 329 and the need for a clubhouse was recognized.

In August of 1921, a lot was purchased at the corner of Virginia and Elizabeth Streets for the sum of $16,000. The final payment was made in 1922.

Mr. Walter Martens was chosen as architect to design the Clubhouse. Ground was broken in July 1928. The Clubhouse, of French Chateau style, was dedicated March 21, 1929, having been constructed at a cost of $33,329.96.

In recent years, the Club has been engaged in various projects of repair and restoration, and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. It is also included in the East End National Historic Preservation Area of the City of Charleston.

The history of the club parallels that of Charleston - we have been, and continue to be, in the forefront in every type of community project.

The General Federation of Women's Club is one of the world's oldest and largest women's service organizations dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service
