10 Awardees Honored at Annual Event

Charleston, W.Va. – Ten awards were handed out Tuesday, September 12 at the Charleston Area Alliance’s annual “We Love Our Community Awards” event at the Kanawha County Public Library. Sponsored by Spilman Thomas & Battle, with support from Family Care Health Centers, Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh and ZMM Architects & Engineers, these awards honor some of the people, projects, programs and organizations that make the Charleston community stronger and brighter.

“The annual We Love Our Community Awards is our chance to shine the spotlight on the people and places that make significant contributions to the community,” said Susie Salisbury, the Alliance’s Vice President for Community Development. “The artists, small business owners, visionaries and volunteers that we honor here today give of their time, talents, and dedication – and inspire us all to love our community.”

The following individuals, organizations and programs were recognized and presented with customized art by local artist Elisabeth Neill.

Kanawha Heritage Award:  Spring Hill Cemetary Park and Arboretum

Best Development Award:   Appalachian Abattoir

Best Redevelopment Award: WV Health Right West Side CommUNITY Wellness Center and Clinic

Best Redevelopment Award: 900 On Lee

Jeff Miller Sustainable Development Award: Forks of Coal Foundation – Claudia L. Workman Wildlife Education Center 

Community Celebration Award:  Charleston Sternwheel Regatta 

Arts to the Max Award – Individual: Ron Sowell

James R. Thomas Outstanding Volunteer Award: Barbara Rose, Kanawha Garden Club for Charleston In Bloom

Do The Charleston Award:  Chef Paul Smith                      

Placemaking Award: Roadside Park Port of St Albans
